Nomadic peoples live in at least 20 countries in Africa. In the context of a renewed commitment to Education for All, this review examines attempts to provide educational services to nomads. The purpose is to draw on the literature so as to provide a ‘state-of-the-art’ review of nomadic groups and education in Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The book focuses on key issues, including: sedentarization, provision and appropriateness of education and marginalization. The review also addresses issues such as nomads’ resistance to change and their limited participation in education. Findings notably show that multisectoral strategies must be developed, in conjunction with representatives of nomadic groups. Non-formal education requires greater recognition in targeted education policies.
